  • 夜間night*
    Brief:

To try and discourage phone use in bed to get a better nights sleep.

    Description:

Technology has become so embedded into everyday life that it is difficult to detach from it, especially for younger generations who often lose valuable sleeping time because of 'being online'. 夜間night* aims to discourage phone use in bed and aid the process of drifting off to sleep.

夜間night* starts a soothing mood light when the phone is inserted, encouraging sleep whilst charging the phone. 夜間night will react to the phone when a notification or message is received by flashing brightly and vibrating, disturbing the user, questioning whether the phone needs to be on or not.

  • BootVIS
    Brief:

    D&AD Michelin

Create a unique product for MICHELIN that would provide real life assistance to high risk motorists in a roadside emergency situation.

    Description:

Being seen at the roadside is one of the most important things to remember when broken down at the roadside, especially in adverse weather conditions or at night. Ensuring motorists and their vehicles are visible in these circumstances is crucial.

The BootVIS aims to solve this problem. It allows vehicles to be seen by using a selection of highly visible and reflective materials. These features are combined with four LED light strips ensuring the vehicle remains visible at the roadside.

Stored in the boot of the vehicle, the BootVIS can be deployed in seconds by detaching the Velcro straps, unrolling and attaching a single hook to the boot lid or latch. When positioned, a chevron pattern is displayed, similar to that found on the rear of emergency and breakdown assistance vehicles. At night the LED light strip can be activated. Four different segments on the light strip mean that any number of combinations can be used to warn other road users, either by flashing, remaining solid, or turned off.

The BootVIS is easy to use and can be installed in almost every sort of car, allowing for motorists to have ultimate visibility in the event of a breakdown.

  • Lamborghini Aventador SV
    Brief:

Using the recently launched Lamborghini Aventador as a base, create an Aventador SV. A high performance hypercar in the same vein as its predecessor, the Murcielago SV.

    Description:

The Lamborghini Aventador SV was created specifically for Top Gear Magazine. It was to show off what could be the next SV in a long line of high powered Lamborghinis.

Cues were taken from the Murcielago with the rear wing and SV graphics almost taken directly. An aggressive front splitter and rear diffuser design were added. They harked back at the 'crazy' Lambos that people yearn after. A bright orange body colour along with stripe finalised what was already a car not to be taken lightly.

This was the 6th piece of commissioned work for Top Gear magazine.

  • Portable Speakers
    Brief:

    Personal Project

    Description:

Following on from the radio project in the second semester of second year at university, I was unhappy with the way the radio turned out, so I made it my goal to remake them the way that I really wanted them to be in the first place.

The original radio looked at the relationship between light and sound. When the radio was turned on, a light bulb would flicker to the sounds that were made. Similarly, the speakers have exactly the same function, but do not have a radio in them, instead just a set of speakers.

Two different speakers were made. One out of vacuum formed plywood, the other out of bent acrylic with a laser cut veneer exterior.

  • Modular Bag
    Brief:

Using all the knowledge gained from working with textiles at the start of the semester, produce a laptop bag.

    Description:

The Modular bag was a laptop bag that was produced in the first semester of third year. It was meant to be designed so that it would be useful to ourselves and the sort of lives that we live.

The modular bag was designed on the fact that each day the requirements of the bag may be slightly different in that the user may not need their camera or certain cables one day, but they will another day.

It features the main laptop bag itself and 4 addon bags that are attached via leather belt. Each bag has its own padding and is secure.

  • 911 & Porsche World
    Brief:

Produce four illustrations showing four future Porsches that are likely to be introduced in the coming years.

    Description:

As an accompaniment for an article in 911 & Porsche World Magazine, four images were to be produced.

One showing a potential 928 successor based on a shortened Panamera, another showing the next in line of the legendary 911's, a third one was created to show a Panamera convertible and the last one was to visualise a rumoured sub-Boxter level car based roughly on the VW Bluesport Roadster.

  • Principles of Driving and Racing
    Brief:

To produce a set of graphics that described visually various car control, driving, and racing techniques that motoring enthusiasts could relate to.

    Description:

A personal project, the Principles of Driving and Racing aimed to simply show different terms that are used when talking about driving or racing. The idea started on the back of a design submitted into the Final Gear forum T-shirt design competition.

Techniques such as Scandinavian Flick, Handbrake Turn and Racing Line were illustrated. They were compiled into a one off book and for a limited time, a selection were available on DeviantART as prints.

  • Audi S1
    Brief:

Visualise what an Audi S1 would look like using the recently launched/revealed Audi A1 as a base.

    Description:

A commissioned piece, the Audi S1 was for Top Gear magazine. Based upon a standard Audi A1 that was not long revealed the S1 was to capture the essence of hot hatches and give a distinct impression in the small car segment.

Styling cues and inspiration for the S1 were taken from other current Audi models such as the RS5 and Audi Legends such as the Quattro from the 1980's.

It's subtle yet distinctive appearance make the car somewhat believable yet maintaining an aggressive look.

This was the first piece of commissioned work for Top Gear magazine.

  • Bluebirds Duet
    Brief:

Make a product that reacts to or creates music.

    Description:

The Bluebirds Duet was a group project at Dundee University during second year. The other group members along with myself were Andrew Tibbles and Lauren Mclean.

It is an aimless piece of pondering, for a gentle day dreamer that still picks the flowers and thinks, They love me, they love me not. As they flitter away the petals and time of day.

The bird-box itself is made from layered wood with a darker wooden handle to hang of your favourite oak. When the bluebird flies in a distance sensor on the inside sends a signal to the servo which wishes the bird a very warm welcome by plucking its strings to a song. Three timings are predetermined but you can change the notes as you wish.

We've added in some wallpaper on the inside so although it might have noisy neighbours at least the decor is nice. Its all concealed behind a cover piece with a sensitive geometric pattern cut into it.

We hope the Bluebirds Duet will conjure up thoughts like if the bird will learn a new song or try to sing in time and key with its new found home.
